Caps and Gowns
Beginning April 3, students may purchase caps, gowns, and invitations from the College Bookstore located in the Killian building. Distance Learning students may order caps, gowns, and invitations by contacting the Bookstore at (828) 694-1720.
Also beginning April 3, a limited supply of caps and gowns will be available with the Registrar’s Office on a first-come, first-served basis. These caps and gowns are loaned for free to students with a financial need, but must be returned to the Registrar’s Office staff at the end of the evening of the Commencement ceremony. If the borrowed cap and gown are not returned, Blue Ridge Community College reserves the right to withhold the graduate’s diploma and all future transcripts from being released until the cap and gown are returned or replaced. The student is responsible for purchasing the tassel, which is available through the College Bookstore.
All graduates will have an opportunity immediately following the ceremony to donate your cap and gown to a future Blue Ridge Community College graduate with financial need.
Honor society members (Phi Theta Kappa and National Technical Honor Society) are welcome to wear the honor society regalia of their choice but may wear only one tassel during graduation. Please make your purchases using the honor society website(s): www.ptk.org or www.nths.org. Please place order in time to allow for arrival well before May 13.

Procedure for Awarding of Degrees
As you approach the stage, you will give your name card to the appropriate Marshal. When your name is called, you will walk across the stage and shake hands with the College President. You will then shake hands with a College Trustee, where you will also receive your diploma cover. Once you receive your diploma cover, you will walk down the sidewalk, behind the Faculty and Staff, and then back to your seat. Marshals will be strategically placed to guide you throughout the Ceremony.
Degrees can be picked up immediately following the ceremony in the Gallery of the Thomas Auditorium, located in the Sink Building. Graduates who are not present at the graduation ceremony may pick up their diploma at the Registrar’s Office the week following the ceremony.
On Graduation Day, graduates are to park at the front of the Sink Building, which can be accessed at Eagle’s Reach Drive. Overflow parking will be in the Patton Parking Lot. Guest parking will begin in the parking lot above the Industrial Skills Center via Duck Pond Drive. Additional parking will be available in the Patton Parking Lot at the corner of College Drive and Airport Road. Handicap accessible parking areas will be marked on campus.
Family and guests attending graduation who require assistance due to mobility challenges are asked to turn left off the East Campus Drive entrance into the turnabout area near the Blue Ridge Conference Hall. Please display your state-issued handicapped placard before you arrive on campus. Family and guests can unload for level access to the building without having to navigate steps or elevators. This entrance will be used as a drop-off and pick-up point only.
Wheelchairs will be available for persons needing assistance to the Front Terrace. We do advise, however, that these wheelchairs are used to assist persons to and from the Front Terrace. Persons needing a wheelchair for the entire commencement event will need to bring a personal wheelchair.
If you are a person who requires interpreting services due to a hearing impairment, please be advised that our commencement ceremony will be interpreted.
Any other disability related requests should be directed to Judith Harris at (828) 694-1813 at least two weeks in advance of the scheduled ceremony.
