Commencement is a long-awaited celebration of your successful academic accomplishments. It is also recognition of a part of your life that is about to begin. Our commencement exercises at Blue Ridge Community College are a special occasion that we all look forward to sharing with you and your friends and family. It is a time to honor you, the hard work and dedication you put forward in achieving your degree.

Application for Graduation
Candidates for graduation should apply to the Registrar's Office for their degree, diploma, or certificate during registration for their last semester of enrollment.

Rehearsal
Friday, May 12 at 3 p.m.
A required rehearsal for the commencement ceremony will begin at the front entrance of the Spearman Building and will move to the Front Terrace of the Killian Building on the Henderson County Campus. Caps and gowns are not required for rehearsal.

Graduation Day
On Saturday, May 13, graduates must be at the front entrance of the Spearman Building no later than 8:15 a.m. Name cards will be passed out at this time. Please secure personal belongings before the ceremony. There will be no place to leave personal belongings (i.e., purses and jackets) on campus during graduation. Guests may continue on to the Front Terrace and find a seat. They will not be allowed to accompany graduates during the lineup.

Rain Location
In the event of rain, a decision to move the ceremony indoors will be made by Friday, May 12, at 12 p.m. The indoor ceremony will be held in the Technology and Education Development Center Conference Hall on our Henderson County Campus, with overflow seating in the Thomas Auditorium. The indoor location will be a ticketed event. Check the College website or call (828) 694-1661 for the announcement.

Important Ticket Information for Rain Location: A maximum of three guest tickets will be provided for each graduate for the indoor location.

Tickets for the indoor location may be picked up from April 24 to May 4 at the following locations:

  • Henderson County Campus: Registrar's Office in the Sink Building
  • Transylvania County Campus: Student Welcome Center in the Straus Building

Distance Learning students that cannot pick up tickets between April 24-May 4 in person must send an email to the Registrar’s Office at registrar@blueridge.edu to secure tickets. 

Persons picking up tickets on behalf of the graduate must present a signed note of permission from the graduate, along with photo identification, in order to obtain tickets. After May 4, any remaining tickets will be considered extra tickets, available at rehearsal on May 12, on a first-come, first-served basis.Tickets will expire at 8:45 a.m. on May 13. Overflow seating will be available in the Thomas Auditorium in the Sink Building. Tickets are for ages two years old and up; only one ticket may be used per person.

Caps and Gowns
Beginning April 3, students may purchase caps, gowns, and invitations from the College Bookstore located in the Killian building. Distance Learning students may order caps, gowns, and invitations by contacting the Bookstore at (828) 694-1720.

Also beginning April 3, a limited supply of caps and gowns will be available with the Registrar’s Office on a first-come, first-served basis. These caps and gowns are loaned for free to students with a financial need, but must be returned to the Registrar’s Office staff at the end of the evening of the Commencement ceremony. If the borrowed cap and gown are not returned, Blue Ridge Community College reserves the right to withhold the graduate’s diploma and all future transcripts from being released until the cap and gown are returned or replaced. The student is responsible for purchasing the tassel, which is available through the College Bookstore.

All graduates will have an opportunity immediately following the ceremony to donate your cap and gown to a future Blue Ridge Community College graduate with financial need.

Honor Cords/Stoles

Honor society members (Phi Theta Kappa and National Technical Honor Society) are welcome to wear the honor society regalia of their choice but may wear only one tassel during graduation. Please make your purchases using the honor society website(s): www.ptk.org or www.nths.org. Please place order in time to allow for arrival well before May 13.

Graduation Ceremony Etiquette
No cell phone use or noise makers are allowed during graduation. Families deserve to honor and hear the names of each graduate for this occasion.

Graduates must pay all fines and fees, return all library books, and meet any other College obligations prior to graduation.

Procedure for Awarding of Degrees
As you approach the stage, you will give your name card to the appropriate Marshal. When your name is called, you will walk across the stage and shake hands with the College President. You will then shake hands with a College Trustee, where you will also receive your diploma cover.  Once you receive your diploma cover, you will walk down the sidewalk, behind the Faculty and Staff, and then back to your seat.  Marshals will be strategically placed to guide you throughout the Ceremony.

Degree Information
Degrees can be picked up immediately following the ceremony in the Gallery of the Thomas Auditorium, located in the Sink Building. Graduates who are not present at the graduation ceremony may pick up their diploma at the Registrar’s Office the week following the ceremony.

Parking
On Graduation Day, graduates are to park at the front of the Sink Building, which can be accessed at Eagle’s Reach Drive. Overflow parking will be in the Patton Parking Lot. Guest parking will begin in the parking lot above the Industrial Skills Center via Duck Pond Drive. Additional parking will be available in the Patton Parking Lot at the corner of College Drive and Airport Road. Handicap accessible parking areas will be marked on campus.

Special Accommodations

Family and guests attending graduation who require assistance due to mobility challenges are asked to turn left off the East Campus Drive entrance into the turnabout area near the Blue Ridge Conference Hall. Please display your state-issued handicapped placard before you arrive on campus. Family and guests can unload for level access to the building without having to navigate steps or elevators. This entrance will be used as a drop-off and pick-up point only.

Wheelchairs will be available for persons needing assistance to the Front Terrace. We do advise, however, that these wheelchairs are used to assist persons to and from the Front Terrace. Persons needing a wheelchair for the entire commencement event will need to bring a personal wheelchair. 

If you are a person who requires interpreting services due to a hearing impairment, please be advised that our commencement ceremony will be interpreted. 

Any other disability related requests should be directed to Judith Harris at (828) 694-1813 at least two weeks in advance of the scheduled ceremony.
