Prepare for a new career or upgrade existing skills through BRCC's Continuing Education. Learn PC maintenance and repair, online medical office training, desktop publishing, or web development. Weekly sessions allow students to quickly learn to operate a computer and become proficient in a variety of software programs.
BRCC offers six tracks of study:
|Adobe Creative Suite
The Continuing Education department is available to help upgrade your skills and prepare for general computer knowledge, or careers in areas such as: PC maintenance and repair, online medical office training, desktop publishing, or web development. With weekly sessions students quickly learn to operate a computer and become proficient in many software programs.
The Labor and Economic Analysis Division of the NC Department of Commerce predicts that Computer Occupations will increase by 15 % in the next 8 years in the four county region of Henderson, Transylvania, Buncombe and Madison Counties, with an increase of 98 job openings annually. Students will be able to choose from six tracks: Adobe Creative Suite; Adobe Dreamweaver; CompTIA A+; Network +; Security +; and, CCNA. Average wages per Data from NC Labor Market Statistics = $30.00 per hour.

Adobe Creative Suite Track
The four classes teach students to create and work with graphic elements in a workspace, to create and work with interactive documents, to work with digital images, and to create and manage PDF files.
1. Adobe Illustrator
Learn the basic of industry-standard Adobe Illustrator. Become proficient at opening vector files, creating simple graphics, importing files, exporting files to other formats, and using files for media projects.
2. Adobe InDesign
Design professional publications using InDesign CS6. Learn to design long documents, onepage ads, and interactive documents in a powerful and intuitive environment. Learn the effective use of layout, type and graphic styles, symbols, layers, and importing graphics created in Photoshop CS6 and Illustrator CS6.
3. Adobe Photoshop for Beginners
The most popular photoediting program of photographers, graphic designers, web designers, and other graphic professionals. Learn the basic techniques and applications.
4. Adobe Acrobat
Beginners learn to navigate the Acrobat workspace, create Portable Document Format (PDF) files, and create PDF’s from Microsoft Office documents. The course covers using PDF Portfolios, reading and working with PDF files, enhancing and editing PDF documents, adding signatures and security features, using Acrobat for professional printing, and using Acrobat 3D.
All four classes must be successfully passed to sit for the Adobe Certified Expert (ACE) exam. Each course has an aligned credentialing exam.
Students learn the intuitive visual interface program for making and editing websites and mobile apps. Students will use fluid grid layout designed for cross-platform compatibility to create pages. Adobe Dreamweaver is the industry-leading web-design and HTML–editor software. Successful completion of the class prepares students for the Adobe Dreamweaver certification.

MacIntosh for Beginners Applications
Learn the basic skills to get your Mac up and running. In addition to basic system use and system preferences, this course will cover an overview of iLife and other common Apple programs including Address Book, iCal, iTunes, Mail, Safari, and Text Edit.
More MacIntosh Applications
This intermediate level course covers more advanced Mac applications and programs, including iPhoto, Pages, Keynote, and Numbers — from the Apple iLife and iWork software packages. Students must have a basic understanding of the Apple operating system. (New Mac users should begin by taking the Mac for Beginners course.)

Computer Networking Cisco Certified Network Associate Track
Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) certification is highly esteemed. CCNA certification demonstrates knowledge in deploying, maintaining, verifying, securing, and troubleshooting a small to medium-sized Cisco based network. CCNA certified professionals are able to install and configure various services for these types of networks. The course stresses following protocols and technologies — IP, IGRP, Serial, Frame Relay, IP RIP, VLANs, RIP, Ethernet, Access Lists, and NAT. At the completion of the course students will be eligible to sit for the Cisco Certified Network Associate Exam.

Classes offered at BRCC:
Students learn computer technician skills to diagnose and make repairs to personal computers. This course focuses on installation and repair using diagnostic tools and security methodologies to manage viruses and malware, as well as encryption and authentication. Computer proficiency is a prerequisite. At completion, students will be prepared to take the A+ Certification exam.
CompTIA Network + Certification Prep Track
Students learn the basic principles of computer networking and administration. Course work includes designing a business computer network, configuring a router, setting up a network printer, and creating a network workgroup. Focus is on network topologies, the OSI Seven-Layer model, and modern network operating systems. At completion, students will be prepared to take the Network + Certification exam.
CompTIA Security + Certification Prep Track
CompTIA Security+ is an international, vendor-neutral certification that demonstrates competency in network security; compliance and operational security; threats and vulnerabilities; application, data, and host security; access control and identity management; and cryptography. CompTIA Security+ ensures students are able to apply knowledge of security concepts, tools, and procedures to react to security incidents and to guard against them. At completion, students will be prepared to take the Security + Certification exam
BRCC offers a wide variety of courses to teach the use of Microsoft products.
Microsoft Excel is the most prominent spreadsheet program in the business world and professionals everywhere are expected to have a working knowledge of the software. In this course, students enter, calculate, and analyze numerical data. They learn to create customized charts, edit worksheets, manipulate formulas and functions, and format cell properties.
Getting Familiar with Excel
In this 6-hour course, students become familiar with a range of program features that bring greater results from spreadsheets. Students learn the fundamentals of Excel, such as formulas and functions, graphs and charts, formatting, multiple worksheets, and file organization.
Getting Familiar with Word
In this 6-hour course, students gain a practical approach to some of the features of Microsoft Word including the Office ribbon, mail merge, tables, proofreading and formatting tools, as well as learn to use Microsoft Word to create professional business documents.
Learn Microsoft Office 2010 Applications
This course will provide the skills needed to navigate Word, Excel, and Power Point with proficiency using Microsoft Office 2010, so students can help their workplace adapt to the new version of Microsoft.
This class introduces Microsoft’s newest operating system — Windows 8. In this class students learn the basics of Windows 8 and become confident in this new environment. Students learn to navigate the user interface, use the Start Screen and Tiles, use apps, view photos, listen to music, navigate the file system and control panel, and more. This class is for beginners to intermediate users who are new to Windows 8.
Microsoft Word and Publisher Applications
This course teaches Microsoft Word and Publisher in one. In Word students discover new formatting tools to create professional looking documents easily and efficiently. They learn key principles behind such topics as file management, mail merge, and the “Tools” feature for pictures, charts, and SmartArt graphics. In Publisher students learn how to take their business communications to the next level with professional looking business cards, brochures, calendars, and newsletters that they create.

Self-Publishing for Writers Applications
Publish the great American novel or a book of poetry or a chronicle of your experiences. Learn to navigate the self-publishing industry using on-line resources and discover how self-publishing is quickly becoming the most widely used resource for writers. The class will focus on the online publishing program Create Space as students learn to publish works in paperwork, as well as for Kindle and Nook readers.
