Student Support for Distance Learners

Blue Ridge Community College strives to offer comprehensive service to those students who access course delivery online. Curriculum distance learning students are encouraged to access Student Services via the college website or by calling Student Services at (828) 694-1800 for individualized assistance.

Academic Advising  
Academic advising
is provided via the faculty advisor assigned by the registrar's office. Students will be notified by mail as to who their faculty advisor is and how to reach them. Non-degree seeking and distance Interpreter Education students should follow closely the online step-by-step registration instructions located under Distance Learners on the college Website.

Academic Calendar:
Curriculum Distance Learning courses are aligned with the College Calendar. Some courses are offered as 8 week “mini-mesters” and students should check the actual course dates in WebAdvisor or on their printed schedules if mailed by the College.

may be accomplished by emailing the instructor, who will then notify the Registrar's office. Students may also drop themselves during the Drop/Add period through their Web Advisor account.

FERPA - Student Privacy
FERPA - Privacy Rights of Students (Distance and Traditional) in Education gives the guidelines for the release of student records to others. Please review this very important policy. If you have requested a "Do Not Release" with the Registrar's office, be sure to contact the Director for Learning Technologies to discuss any issues with your online classes and accounts. education student to appear in person to be heard, to afford the student due process and expedient resolve of issues, special accommodations may be made such as. written statements, telephone conferences, electronic mail, video tape live video, or similar means of communication. services are also available to Blue Ridge's distance learning students. Services include assistance with career planning, job placement, and job seeking skills such as resume writing and interviewing. Online BRCC College Orientation -
 Blue Ridge Community College offers a comprehensive online orientation convenient for Distance Learners. When you have successfully completed the Orientation, be sure to click on the "email scores" button at the end of the orientation. The ACA 115 Student Success and Study Skills course requires both this orientation and the separate Moodle Orientation (please see below).

Online Moodle Orientation
Online Moodle Orientation
. Moodle is the online platform or program we use to deliver the majority of our online courses. After registration, the I.T. Department will create a user name and password for you and "enroll" you into MORIENT, the Moodle Orientation. Upon successful completion of the Orientation you will be able to download a certificate of completion that could be an assignment in several of your online courses. Save the completion PDF file so you can use it in any course that asks you to complete the orientation. You will be required to login, so, refer to the Tutorials page under Distance Learning for account information.

Placement Testing
Placement Testing
may be arranged by contacting Student Services at (828) 694-1800. If testing is
required for your program of study, arrangements can usually be made to complete the requirement at a location convenient to you IF requested a minimum of two weeks prior to the beginning of the semester. Please see the tutorial for viewing your Placement test scores in WebAdvisor.

Textbooks
Textbooks may be ordered online
or by telephoning the campus bookstore (828)694-1720. Barnes and Nobles operates our bookstore, and will be able to charge your books to your Financial Aide account if you are eligible. There will be a
small charge for shipping. Major credit cards are accepted. NOTE: Returns can be processed with UNOPENED books and must be accompanied with the original receipt mailed with the book. Pursuant to the Higher Education Opportunity Act, Blue Ridge Community College is required to share required textbook information (ISBN number and retail price) with students at the time they register for classes. This information can be found on the Blue Ridge Community College Bookstore website.

Transcript Evaluations
Transcript Evaluations.
Transcripts of other college's credits will be evaluated by the Student Services Counselor assigned
to the student's declared program area. Official transcripts must be received from the originating college in a sealed envelope. Written notification of credits transferred will be mailed to the applicant by the Registrar's office. Please see the "How to View Your Unofficial Transcripts Using WebAdvisor" tutorial.

The College accepts written, faxed or scanned requests.
